Statement by the artist, David Call

This image portrays Matt Hamill as the fearless gladiator leaving a path of defeated gladiators. Gladiator and Mixed Martial Arts fighting are similar in some ways. MMA use different discipline of fighting such as Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling, and Jiu-Jitsu. Gladiator fighting also had different disciplines too. They had Thracian (double hooked swords) , Murmillo ( heavy armored, short sword, small shield), Secutor (light armor, long sword, big shield), and Retiarius (trident spear , weighted fishing net). Matt is trained very well to face different fighters with their own fighting discipline. Matt is using a battle hammer as the weapon of his choice to fight against other gladiators. The battle hammer reflects his nickname: The Hammer. In this image, Matt defeated many gladiators and waiting for next one to challenge him. He screamed ” NEXT!” Thus that is the title of this linocut, NEXT!
